Born in Viña del Mar in Chile in 1967, Sandra studied in Düsseldorf under Rosemarie Trockel and Jannis Kounellis, Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s drawings are informed by film, fairy tales and botanical and zoological textbooks. The extremely precise images show instances that stem from both her personal and a wider universal experience: they appear ecstatic, traumatic and surrealistic.
Her work has among others been exhibited at Centre Pompidou, Paris, Musem KunstPalast in Düsseldorf, and is present in various public and private collections. Sandra Vásquez was awarded the prestigious Guerlain Prize in 2009. The prize has been the most significant event in her career before her oncoming solo show at the Bonnefantenmuseum.
